Illnesses which occur because of physical causes should be treated by doctors with medical remedies; those which are due to spiritual causes disappear through spiritual means. Thus, an illness caused by affliction, fear, nervous impressions, will be healed more effectively by spiritual rather than physical treatment. Hence, both kinds of treatment should be followed; they are not contradictory. ~ ‘Abdu’l-Bahá

Today’s society is largely spiritually disconnected from a sense of meaning and purpose. Most people have lost their connection with themselves. Some people have lost their connection with their family, friends and community. We have lost our sense of belonging somewhere. We have lost our connection with our values and what matters most.
We are bombarded with mixed messages in our culture. We define ourselves by how much money we make, the status of our work, the kind of car we drive or the house we live in. However, we are a lot more than what we do and what we own.
Trying to have it all – in terms of materialistic possessions, money, power and status – has carried us away from our hearts and souls. The resulting spiritual hunger has led to physical, mental and emotional sickness for many individuals.
Some people deal with emotional and spiritual hunger by abusing food, sex, alcohol, drugs, work, gambling or shopping. We have a growing obesity epidemic and addiction problems in many countries.
Many communities are dealing with social and emotional crises relative to spiritual emptiness, including violence, crimes, depression, suicide, alcoholism and drug addiction.
Collective consciousness is made up of individuals. Since we’re all part of the collective consciousness of humanity, the result of our actions is transmitted into mass consciousness.
When individuals are dealing with physical, mental, emotional and spiritual sickness, their families and communities are also affected. In turn, the resulting actions of these unhealthy individuals also affect the planet.
We are dealing with over-population, pollution and global warming. Our natural resources are dwindling from destruction and rapid consumption. It’s frightening to think what can happen to our world if individuals don’t find a way to heal themselves. Will these unhealthy individuals end up destroying themselves, their families, their communities and the planet?
When you learn how to nurture and heal yourself, your own healing contributes to the healing of the world. Healing your mind, body and spirit not only can change your life, but it can also change the world.
